PPM weigh-day checklist
One page to print and keep on the dash: how to get the empty and full weight tickets for a military PPM (formerly DITY) move in a U-Haul or other rental. Every step comes from the official sources listed at the bottom.
Your Transportation Office (TO) owns the rules. Branch guidance differs. Call them before weigh day, especially about towing a car and where to weigh. This is a summary, not legal or entitlement advice.
Before weigh day
- Confirm with your TO what must be printed on the ticket and whether you can weigh at origin, destination, or both.
- Find a certified scale near pickup and near home. Military OneSource says privately owned truck scales are an accepted place to get tickets. Find a public scale.
- Plan one empty + one full ticket for every vehicle and every trip that carries household goods (Fort Hood, NAVSUP).
- Keep every scale receipt. DFAS lists weight-ticket fees as an operating expense.
Empty weigh (tare)
- Hook up anything the truck will tow on the move. A rental truck and trailer are weighed together, empty and full (Fort Hood).
- Fuel: follow your TO. Fort Hood shows a full tank for both weighs; Navy says full tanks at each weighing, or no fuel added between weighs if empty comes first.
- Everybody out. No passengers in the vehicle on the scale (Navy).
- Weigh before a single box goes in. Have the ticket marked EMPTY with the vehicle described.
Full weigh (gross)
- Same truck, same trailer, same fuel rule, nobody aboard.
- Have the ticket marked FULL with the vehicle described.
- Towing your car? Guidance disagrees (Fort Hood: weighed together; Navy: detach first). Ask your TO, then do it the same way both times.
At a CAT Scale
- No appointment needed. Split the vehicle across platform 1 and 2 (1 is nearest the intercom sign), press the intercom, give your info, pull off, go inside.
- CAT’s common military answers: Truck/Tractor # = license plate; Company name = branch; Trailer # = rank; Commodity = name and last four of SSN. Verify with your branch.
- Give the same answers at both weighs.
Before you leave the lot
- Weighmaster signature is on the ticket (CAT: it should print automatically, but double-check).
- Ticket is legible, unaltered, and identifies the vehicle (NAVSUP). CAT tickets cannot be edited after printing.
- Your name, rank, and last four of SSN are on it (Fort Hood turn-in handout).
- Snap a photo of each ticket and keep the originals with your rental agreement.
Turn-in packet (DFAS list)
- Orders · DD 1351-2 travel voucher · DD 2278 from the TO · paid rental agreement · registration if you used your own vehicle or trailer · certified empty and full weight tickets.
