How much does a CAT Scale cost, and how does it work?

A CAT Scale weigh costs $15.25 in the U.S., and a reweigh within 24 hours costs $5.25. California weighmaster certificates cost more. Here is what you pay, what you get for it, and how to drive on and off without holding up the truckers behind you, all taken from CAT Scale’s own pages.

Prices below were read from CAT Scale and Weigh My Truck pages on 21 Oct 2026. CAT can change them, so confirm at the fuel desk before you weigh. WeighHere is independent and not affiliated with CAT Scale Company.

How the reweigh discount works

The $5.25 reweigh is the part most people miss. CAT’s FAQ says it applies only when all four of these are true:

For a do-it-yourself move, that can mean weighing the empty U-Haul, loading nearby, and coming back to the same truck stop the same day for a cheaper full weigh. Ask the cashier first. If your two weighs have to happen at different scales, or a day apart, plan on two full-price tickets.

CAT also caps the cost for someone shuffling a load to get legal. After a full-price weigh and two reweighs, $25.75 so far, the on-duty manager may void further reweighs until you are legal, and you pay only for the reweigh that shows you legal. CAT’s example total is $31.00.

When California costs more

CAT says you need a California Weighmaster Certificate if you are being paid by weight or registering a vehicle with the California DMV. That certificate is $30.50 for a first weigh and $10.50 for a reweigh at the same location within 24 hours. For most other loads, CAT says the California Guaranteed ticket at the standard price will do.

The Weigh My Truck PDF is certified everywhere except California, because California certificates need information the app does not collect. In California, go inside for the printed certificate. Military movers should read PPM / DITY weight tickets in Southern California before they pay.

How a CAT weigh works, step by step

  1. Find a CAT Scale. Most sit behind truck stops such as Pilot, Flying J, Love’s, TA, and Petro. Use a WeighHere area page or the CAT Scale locator. No appointment is needed.
  2. Pull on slowly and stop with every axle on the deck. A CAT Scale has three platforms. Put the steer axle (front wheels) on platform 1, the drive or rear axle on platform 2, and any trailer, boat, or tow car on platform 3. Platform 1 is the one closest to the intercom sign.
  3. Press the intercom button and give the cashier what they ask for. Commercial drivers give a truck number, company, trailer number, and commodity. Everyone else just answers the same fields. CAT’s DITY page lists the usual military answers.
  4. Pull off and go inside to pay and pick up the ticket. With the app, the weight appears on your phone and a PDF arrives by email, and two printed copies are held at the fuel desk for one hour.
  5. Read the ticket before you leave. CAT says tickets are legal documents and cannot be edited after they print.

When a CAT Scale is the wrong scale

CAT says its scales are set to a 2,000 lb threshold. A car headed to the DMV, an empty utility trailer, or a small boat trailer may not register. Call CAT’s help desk at 1-877-228-7225, ext. 6, or go to a dedicated public scale house, which often weighs light vehicles and has a licensed weighmaster on site. Our page on CAT’s 2,000 lb minimum lists Los Angeles County options. Horse owners should also read weighing a horse trailer before pulling into a busy truck stop.

A highway weigh station is not a substitute either. Those are enforcement sites, not ticket counters. See public scale vs highway weigh station.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a CAT Scale weigh cost?

CAT Scale publishes U.S. pricing of $15.25 for a first weigh and $5.25 for a reweigh. Canadian locations are C$26.00 and C$8.50. Prices were checked on CAT's pages on 21 Oct 2026; confirm at the fuel desk.

What counts as a CAT Scale reweigh?

CAT's FAQ says the $5.25 reweigh applies when it is the same vehicle (truck and trailer), you present the full-price ticket, you use the same scale, and you come back within 24 hours of the full-price weigh.

Does a CAT Scale weigh cost more in California?

Only if you need a California Weighmaster Certificate, which CAT says applies when you are paid by weight or registering a vehicle with the California DMV. That certificate is $30.50 for a first weigh and $10.50 for a reweigh. For most loads a California Guaranteed ticket at $15.25 and $5.25 is enough.

Do I need an appointment to use a CAT Scale?

No. CAT says no appointment is necessary. Pull onto the scale, press the intercom button, give the cashier your information, then pull off and go inside for the ticket.

Is the Weigh My Truck app free?

Yes. Weigh My Truck's help page says the app is free and CAT charges nothing extra to use it; you pay the normal weigh price. The emailed PDF is certified everywhere except California.

Can a CAT Scale weigh my car or a small trailer?

Usually not. CAT says its scales are set to a 2,000 lb threshold and asks owners of anything estimated lighter to call its help desk at 1-877-228-7225, ext. 6. A dedicated public scale house is the better choice for light vehicles.

Can a CAT Scale give me corner or wheel weights?

No. CAT says its scales give axle weights and a gross weight, but not individual wheel or corner weights, and it does not allow that type of weighing.

What if I lose my CAT Scale ticket?

CAT keeps an electronic record of every ticket for seven years. You can request a copy through the Ticket Copy Request form on catscale.com.
